I definitely agree that breaking into publishing is all about knowing the right people, which often means the world you’re born into. I think that’s why so many writers were originally optimistic about blogging, which seemed so open and Utopian. I’m still optimistic, but part of me also thinks there are almost just as many barriers as ever. Now our gatekeepers are algorithms and SEO and advertising. Even on Medium, it’s not a strict meritocracy — there homepage is curated by gatekeepers. But then I remind myself that writing isn’t about getting into the right magazines, anyway.
