There’s never just one answer, of course. But I can tell you what I did in my experience. when I got laid off I tried to make a go of it with freelance writing.
It was the most stressful thing I’ve ever done. You never know where your next paycheck will come from and you’re constantly fighting a battle of getting your current work done in trying to get the next job. It made something I love to do (writing) become a major source of anxiety and not something I enjoyed anymore.
What I would recommend — at least from experience — is find a day job pays the bills. Then do what you love on the side and do it because you enjoy it, and as a bonus it brings in extra money.
Or maybe try the male gigolo thing. I never tried that.
